Privilege, Presence, Passion & Power

And pray in the Spirit at all times with all kinds of prayers and requests.

Ijust came across a quote by a man who lived many many centuries ago but spoke of a timeless truth. Saint John Chrysostom (349-407) was an Early Church Father and also was the Archbishop of Constantinople. He wrote, “Prayer… is the root, the fountain, the mother of a thousand blessings… The potency of prayer has subdued the strength of fire, it has bridled the rage of lions… extinguished wars, appeased the elements, expelled demons, burst the chains of death, expanded the gates of heaven, assuaged diseases… rescued cities from destruction… and arrested the progress of the thunderbolt.”

Wow. Do you ever struggle with feeling helpless in the midst of the toxic swirl of this dark and hurting world? Everywhere we turn there are seemingly hopeless and insurmountable struggles all around and also within our own hearts. It has been said, “Look outward, get distressed; look inward, be depressed; look upward, get blessed.” I think the fact that God not only invites us to pray but wants us to pray is an incredible wonder. Prayer is just conversation with God. He invites us to talk to Him about our joys, bring Him our thanks, tell Him our concerns, and to tell Him about our desires. Just let that thought percolate in your heart – let’s ponder His invitation to us of both intimacy and influence with Him.

Prayer is privilege – When we pray, we have access to the Creator of the universe, the One who made the moon, stars and every living thing. What an amazing gift!

Prayer is presence – Through Christ we are ushered into the God’s presence and we are welcomed as His beloved child. He leans low and listens to us as a loving Father would – I often meditate on Him holding me so close to His heart, that I can hear His heartbeat of love.

Prayer is passion – Scripture says that the love of God is poured out within our hearts thorough the Holy Spirit who loves us. If you feel that your love tank is dry, your energy drained by all the small things and all the big things in life – run to God in prayer. He is the Source of living water to quench your thirst.

Prayer is power – Throughout the pages of scripture, we find God’s people actively participating in the work of God through prayer. As we pray, God works in both the unseen world as well as the seen world to accomplish His purposes and bring His Kingdom. LET’S PRAY!
