God has a covenant relationship with His people, and He always keeps His promises, no matter what our shortcomings may be. In fact, even our best efforts don’t get us into right relationship with God. We only have right relationship with Him because of Jesus. The Law doesn’t get rid of God’s promise, and it doesn’t save us, so what does it do? It all becomes clear in the light of the Gospel.

We often speak of freedom – in relation to choices, rights, and even faith. What does freedom really mean? Are there ever times when freedom doesn’t fit our expectations of how it should be? How does the idea of law fit with freedom?

Read Psalm 19:7-8. How does David describe God’s laws / testimony / precepts / commandments? How does this fit with our understanding of the Law?

Read Galatians 3:15-18. What’s the difference between inheritance based on law and inheritance based on promise?

Read Galatians 3:19-25. What’s the purpose of the Law?

Read Matthew 5:17 and Romans 7:4-6. What do these passages indicate about the Law and the Spirit? How do these work together?
