A Conduit for a Blessing

But blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord, whose confidence is in him.
They will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream.
It does not fear when heat comes; its leaves are always green.
It has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit.

Jeremiah 17:7-8 (NIV)

Ayear ago, a dear friend of over 10 years and her husband requested we meet. She and her husband had been searching to buy their first house for several months. They had finally found a home they loved in their price range. Even though they had saved a majority of the price of this very modest home, they were still short a significant chunk and unable to secure a loan. They found themselves at a crossroads on how to move forward. They prayed about it and felt called to ask my husband and I for a loan. They admitted afterwards they were terrified of damaging our relationship. Ultimately, they decided to take the big leap of faith God was nudging them towards. My husband and I asked a lot of questions that night. We could give them the loan, but it would mean pulling from money we’d set aside for college expenses for our boys. We reviewed their finances and could see an incredible pattern of godly wisdom steering their financial ship. They were living shockingly far below their means, which is exactly how they had managed to save such a large sum of money. They were also faithfully tithing and investing in God’s kingdom.
God, thank you for allowing us the blessing of generosity – both to give it and to receive it. We appreciate how You call us to take leaps of faith so that You can show us that You are always here for us.

We said yes to loaning them the money. Was it risky? Of course. But this was no blind leap of faith. As it says in Jeremiah, like the tree, we must plant ourselves by the water and extend our roots by a stream. When we plant ourselves in God’s presence and drink from His Word, He never fails to produce fruit.

We met these friends for dinner last week, exactly one year after they first asked for the loan. To our great shock, they paid off their loan, in full, two years ahead of schedule! They were humbled with gratitude that we stepped into their lives as a conduit for a miracle for them.

Plant yourself in God’s presence and extend your roots. You never know how He’ll use them.
