Day 4: Come Thou Long Expected Jesus

by Dec 4, 2020Christmas 2020, Devotional, Songs of Christmas

Come, Thou long expected Jesus
Born to set Thy people free;
From our fears and sins release us,
Let us find our rest in Thee.
Israel’s strength and consolation,
Hope of all the earth Thou art;
Dear desire of every nation,
Joy of every longing heart.
Born Thy people to deliver,
Born a child and yet a King,
Born to reign in us forever,
Now Thy gracious kingdom bring.
By Thine own eternal Spirit
Rule in all our hearts alone;
By Thine all sufficient merit,
Raise us to Thy glorious throne.

Having children has been a lifelong dream of mine. Ever since I was a little girl playing make believe with my sister, I was always the mom in our pretend home. Always. I couldn’t wait for the day that dream would finally come true.

Becoming a mother has been one of my deepest desires and it has yet to be fulfilled. I am still waiting. But this waiting and longing also serves as an invitation to seek our true desire: Jesus. I have been given the opportunity to draw near to God (James 4:8) instead of drawing back in my pain and frustration. Longing is a gift that enables me to reach out to God and show Him what is in my heart.

As Christmas approaches, my prayer is that I would long for Jesus with the same intensity as I long to be a mother. The hymn “Come Thou Long Expected Jesus”, written by Charles Wesley, encompasses this prayer in its lyrics.

Come, Thou long expected Jesus
Born to set Thy people free;
From our fears and sins release us,
Let us find our rest in Thee.
Israel’s strength and consolation,
Hope of all the earth Thou art;
Dear desire of every nation,
Joy of every longing heart.

Jesus is the joy of every longing heart. He is enough for us in the face of our disappointment. He satisfies the longing soul, (Psalm 107:9, ESV). The Christmas season can be difficult for many people, but it’s a time of gratitude for the now, and hope for the not yet. We sing songs like “Come Thou Long Expected Jesus” as a reminder for what Christ has done in His first coming and as encouragement for what He will do in His second coming. The absence of His presence is a gift to His Church in that we would seek Him.

The absence of my own children causes my heart to ache with longing, but this okay. I will keep asking, keep seeking, and keep knocking, because I know I will find my rest in Jesus.

Day 24: O Holy Night

Oh, holy night! The stars are brightly shiningIt is the night of the dear Savior's birthLong lay the world in sin and error piningTill He appeared and the soul felt its worthA thrill of hope the weary world rejoicesFor yonder breaks a new and glorious morn Fall on...

Day 16: Silent Night

Silent night, holy night All is calm, all is bright 'Round yon virgin Mother and Child Holy infant so tender and mild Sleep in heavenly peace   Silent night, holy night! Shepherds quake at the sight! Glories stream from heaven afar; Heavenly hosts sing Al-le-lu-ia!...
