Dark Nights, Faithful God

But this I call to mind, and therefore I have hope: The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.

Lamentations 3:21-23 (ESV)

I‘m truly a sucker for the beautiful fall leaves we are blessed to have on the East Coast. As soon as the green turns to red, orange, and yellow, I’m in my car driving in the mountains to look at the amazing leaves. I love to hike up to the top of a mountain and just sit and take in the sight. But now, the leaves have all fallen off and winter is rolling in, complete with freezing cold temperatures, the return of scraping windshields, and cozy fires in the fireplace. Seasons change every couple of months. It sometimes feels like we blink and the next season is upon us. As winter has arrived this year, I’ve been struck by the steadfastness of God. And as the weather has changed dramatically these past few weeks, it also feels like a new season in my personal life — a season of healing and hope after a prolonged painful season.
Lord, we are so grateful for your unchanging nature. As we head into winter, help us to cling to your steadfast love. Give us opportunities to encourage others who may be facing their own dark season. Amen.

Yet, God is the same in fall as winter, and He’s the same in my season of pain as He is in my new season of healing.

When God is silent, He’s still present. When God is speaking to us so clearly, He loves us just the same as when He’s quiet. Our God who created time doesn’t change with the seasons.

Honestly, in dark seasons where it feels like you can’t catch a break, it can be so easy to doubt the presence and goodness of God. But like the above verse, His Word reminds us of the truth. In seasons of darkness, staying committed to reading Scripture is not always easy, but it’s worth it.

It’s been my prayer as seasons change, figuratively and literally, that the Lord would restore my joy. This winter as nights grow long and cold, join me in this prayer, and let’s see how God answers it.

“Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and uphold me with a willing spirit.” Psalm 51:12
