Day 19: Breath of Heaven

by Dec 19, 2020Christmas 2020, Devotional, Songs of Christmas

I have traveled many moonless nights
Cold and weary with a babe inside
And I wonder what I’ve done
Holy father you have come
And chosen me now to carry your son

I am waiting in a silent prayer
I am frightened by the load I bear
In a world as cold as stone
Must I walk this path alone?
Be with me now

Hold me together
Be forever near me
Breath of heaven
Breath of heaven
Lighten my darkness
Pour over me your holiness
For you are holy
Breath of heaven

Do you wonder as you watch my face
If a wiser one should have had my place
But I offer all I am
For the mercy of your plan
Help me be strong
Help me be
Help me

Mary’s faith was deep, even as a teenager. God did not choose Mary by accident. He selected the perfect girl from Nazareth to carry His Son in her womb.   And His choice was a girl whose initial reaction to the angel Gabriel was shock.  But His choice was a girl who was obedient despite this.

“For nothing will be impossible with God. … Let it be to me according to Your word,” said Mary after Gabriel delivered the news. This faith would carry Mary through the highs and lows of her pregnancy.

Pregnant and unwed, Mary’s passionate song in Luke 1:46-55 shows her deep faith and allegiance to the Lord. Yet, even with this, Mary was human. The journey through the desert to Bethlehem and the realization there were no rooms available for her and Joseph could not have been easy.

“Breath of Heaven” so beautifully verbalizes the weariness and weakness Mary must have felt knowing she was carrying the Savior of the World. A weariness that we can’t replicate, yet we can relate to:

I am frightened by the load I bear

In a world as cold as stone.

Must I walk this path alone?

This year, the weariness and weight of 2020 feels very tangible. The unknowns with the COVID-19 pandemic, the presidential election, societal upheaval, and personal testing of faith have made this Christmas season feel heavier than most. It is a frightening load.

But we have a choice. Will we choose to believe Gabriel when he says “Do not be afraid” to Mary as her journey through a difficult year was just beginning?

Throughout her pregnancy and in the days after, Mary clung to that faith she knew was true. A faith that was established before she could feel Jesus kick in her womb.

Do you wonder as you watch my face

If a wiser one should have had my place

But I offer all I am

For the mercy of your plan

Mary knew God would not forsake her on the journey to Bethlehem, nor in the chaos of childbirth, nor even as Herod sought to kill her son. And that same God will not forsake us. The darkness of this year may seem insurmountable and the pain unbearable, but the God that Mary put her faith in is the same God offering us that comfort today.

Day 24: O Holy Night

Oh, holy night! The stars are brightly shiningIt is the night of the dear Savior's birthLong lay the world in sin and error piningTill He appeared and the soul felt its worthA thrill of hope the weary world rejoicesFor yonder breaks a new and glorious morn Fall on...

Day 16: Silent Night

Silent night, holy night All is calm, all is bright 'Round yon virgin Mother and Child Holy infant so tender and mild Sleep in heavenly peace   Silent night, holy night! Shepherds quake at the sight! Glories stream from heaven afar; Heavenly hosts sing Al-le-lu-ia!...
