Day 20: Away In The Manger

by Dec 20, 2020Christmas 2020, Devotional, Songs of Christmas

Away in a manger
No crib for His bed
The little Lord Jesus
Lay down His sweet head

The stars in the sky
Look down where He lay
The little Lord Jesus
Asleep on the hay

The cattle are lowing
The poor Baby wakes
But little Lord Jesus
No crying He makes

I love Thee, Lord Jesus
Look down from the sky
And stay by my side
‘Til morning is nigh

Be near me, Lord Jesus
I ask Thee to stay
Close by me forever
And love me, I pray

Bless all the dear children
In Thy tender care
And take us to Heaven
To live with Thee there

My impression of the nativity scene as a child was similar to what many of us pictured, I’m sure.  Baby Jesus lays in a cradle-like manger comfortably padded with soft hay.  Stoic and peaceful livestock look reverently on, as do the wise men in their exotic garb.  Sprinkle in a few angels (cherub-style, chubby and winged) and the mental scene is complete. It’s an image that the sweet and simple “Away in the Manger” serves to confirm:
Away in a manger

No crib for His bed

The little Lord Jesus

Lay down His sweet head

The stars in the sky

Look down where He lay

The little Lord Jesus

Asleep on the hay

This impression seems to only emphasize the idea that God’s “ideal world” is full of quiet compliant infants and stars shining down with pride.  It would be easy to take the lyrics in this carol at face value and read them as fluffy as the clouds holding the harp-playing angels, but just as the nativity scene was likely not as idyllic as we envision, I feel these lyrics also have a deeper meaning.

Be near me, Lord Jesus, I ask Thee to stay

Close by me forever and love me, I pray

Bless all the dear children in Thy tender care

And take us to Heaven to live with Thee there

These lyrics specifically ask Jesus to bless all of His dear children with His care — even the children born in the muck of today’s “mangers.” All of them.  The children who are different from us. The children who disagree with us. Liberal children.  Conservative children.  Children against vaccinations and children pushing for them to be mandatory.  Even the children (yes, they exist!) that believe that the Earth is flat. Children who are poor and rich and lost and found.  All His dear children.

Imagine what a difference we would see if this season if we led by example and went beyond the surface pleasantries and fluff to a deeper place. A place where we truly work to love all of the dear and different children we share our world with.

Day 24: O Holy Night

Oh, holy night! The stars are brightly shiningIt is the night of the dear Savior's birthLong lay the world in sin and error piningTill He appeared and the soul felt its worthA thrill of hope the weary world rejoicesFor yonder breaks a new and glorious morn Fall on...

Day 16: Silent Night

Silent night, holy night All is calm, all is bright 'Round yon virgin Mother and Child Holy infant so tender and mild Sleep in heavenly peace   Silent night, holy night! Shepherds quake at the sight! Glories stream from heaven afar; Heavenly hosts sing Al-le-lu-ia!...
