Day 8: I Heard The Bells On Christmas Day

by Dec 8, 2020Christmas 2020, Devotional, Songs of Christmas

I heard the bells on Christmas day
Their old familiar carols play
And mild and sweet their songs repeat
Of peace on earth good will to men

And the bells are ringing
Like a choir they’re singing
In my heart I hear them

And in despair I bowed my head
There is no peace on earth I said
For hate is strong and mocks the song

Then rang the bells more loud and deep
God is not dead, nor does he sleep
The wrong shall fail, the right prevail

It was near the end of 2010 when I first heard to the carol “I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day.” I had just purchased the Casting Crowns’ Christmas album Peace on Earth which was fitting because at that time, peace on earth was something my family truly needed. The months leading up to Christmas had been difficult and exhausting. To name just a few of the challenges we had faced that year, my dad was deployed for most of the year to Iraq, my mom and I were involved in a hit and run accident, and to top things off, we almost had to evacuate our house due to flooding in the area.

On a chilly November afternoon, I locked myself away in my room and listened to Peace on Earth. When “I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day” played, the haunting tones and somber lyrics of the song caught my attention. The song takes the listener on a beautiful journey from grief and sorrow to joy and expectation of the good news of the gospel:

And in despair I bowed my head
There is no peace on earth I said
For hate is strong and mocks the song
Of peace on earth, good will to men

Then rang the bells more loud and deep
God is not dead, nor does he sleep
The wrong shall fail, the right prevail
With peace on earth, good will to men

My circumstances from ten years ago probably sounds familiar to many of our circumstances today. In the face of the unknown, after all that we have endured this year, it may be hard to feel the usual Christmas cheer. With the overwhelming problems we face, some of us may feel that peace on earth just isn’t possible in 2020 or beyond. Yet we have reason to believe in the hope we profess, and just like the church bells, the church can triumphantly proclaim the gospel message: God is not dead, nor does He sleep. Rather, God is alive and active in all of our circumstances ushering in peace on earth.

Day 24: O Holy Night

Oh, holy night! The stars are brightly shiningIt is the night of the dear Savior's birthLong lay the world in sin and error piningTill He appeared and the soul felt its worthA thrill of hope the weary world rejoicesFor yonder breaks a new and glorious morn Fall on...

Day 16: Silent Night

Silent night, holy night All is calm, all is bright 'Round yon virgin Mother and Child Holy infant so tender and mild Sleep in heavenly peace   Silent night, holy night! Shepherds quake at the sight! Glories stream from heaven afar; Heavenly hosts sing Al-le-lu-ia!...
