Going Between

In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans.

Romans 8:26

Intercede: verb: to intervene on behalf of another; the word’s Latin roots literally mean “to go between”

As followers of Jesus, you and I have been given a mighty job to do. We are to not only to pray to God to glorify Him, to ask for what we need, but we are also called to intercede for those around us.

These past few months have been wrought with change. Our daily norms have been uprooted. As fall approaches, it appears we have more time to spend in this new way of life. I find it is easy to get wrapped up in MY needs and MY wants. God, keep me and my loved ones safe. God, please create a safe way for my kids to spend some time away from me. God please protect our jobs.

I’ve noticed a tightening in of my circle. I must confess my prayers have become smaller and smaller. They’ve become more and more about ME.

Yet, I don’t think that’s what God intends for me. For us.

The other day, in my quiet time, one word kept coming to mind. Intercede. It didn’t make sense in response to my prayers. But I kept being reminded of this word.

God protect us. Intercede

God keep us safe. Intercede

God safely send my kids back to school. Intercede

God give me patience. Intercede

God give me grace. Intercede

God give me joy. Intercede

God give me contentment. Intercede

God is gently reminding me that my purpose as a believer is to intercede for OTHERS. In fact, intercession is so important to God that we have both the Holy Spirit and Jesus living to intercede for US.

So, I’m challenging myself. Maybe you’d like to join me? I’m calling it: Three for 30 Intercession. Each day for the next 30 days, I’m interceding for three others. One person in the following categories:

My Family: Who can I pray for? My spouse, my child, my parent, my sibling. Pray for this person. Pray they’d know, trust, and love Jesus

My Immediate Circle: Again, pick a person in your everyday life. This time, pick someone who isn’t related to you. A boss, a co-worker, a neighbor, a friend.

The World: This time you are going to pick someone you don’t personally know. A county, state, country, or world leader.

Romans 8:34 Who then is the one who condemns? No one. Christ Jesus who died – more than that, who was raised to life – is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us.

1 Timothy 2:1 I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people.

James 5:16 Therefore, confess your sins to each other, pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.

Hearing for the Holidays
