Good All The Time

The Lord is good to all, and his mercy is over all that he has made.

Psalm 145:9

The notes app on my iPhone might be my most frequently used app. I love writing down bits of wisdom I read or hear during the day. I was recently looking through old notes and came across one from the summer of 2015 that made me pause. It had no context with it — just this one sentence.

“God is good, and God gets to define good.”

What is happening around the world and even in our own communities right now, doesn’t feel good. But in the midst of the turmoil and confusion in the world, God is good. It is in His nature. He can’t be anything but good because that is who He is — our perfect Savior, Father, friend, and Redeemer. Because of Him, we know what good means.

The sickness, unemployment, loneliness, and fear that have flooded our lives distract us from His goodness. It may even seem hard to believe that a good God is still in control. Yet, we can cling to the unchanging nature of God. Since before the world began, He was good, and He loves His children deeply.

We see in Malachi 3:6, that God doesn’t change. That means He is still good even today. “For I the LORD do not change; therefore you, O children of Jacob, are not consumed.”

Lord, I pray that this week we can focus on your goodness in the midst of the distractions of this world. Thank you for being our Rock that never changes.

More and more we are hearing the idea of “my truth.” This is the belief that each of us can choose what is good for us individually. This distorts what God has said is true and good.

We serve a good God who shows us the truth in His Word. In this season of life, when we don’t know what tomorrow will bring, we are loved by a God who is good. We can experience that goodness through leaning deeper into a relationship with Him.
