The Wait

…the heavens were opened, and the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily form, like a dove; and a voice came from Heaven, “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.’”Jesus, when he began his ministry, was about thirty years of age…

Luke 3:21b-23a

2020 has been the year of waiting. Many of us have had to pause our lives and rearrange our days to suit this strange time. We wait for normal to return and lives to resume. As months flip by, we wonder how much longer? At times, I’ve found myself wondering where God is in this wait? Quickly, I am reassured that God is exactly where He’s always been. God is in the wait WITH us.

We are in good company with those who first had to wait:

  • Abraham and Sarah waited. They were well past the age for childbirth when Isaac was born. They waited.
  • Joseph waited. His brothers sold him into slavery and he was then thrown in prison. He waited.
  • David waited. He was told he’d be king, yet still he had to wait though Saul’s reign. Saul hated him. He waited.
  • Jesus waited. His public ministry did not begin until he was 30 years old. He had many years as a child, a young adult, and an even an established adult to wait. Even his mother wanted him to show who he was. It wasn’t time. He waited.

Although our wait seems long, when viewed through the lens of eternity, it isn’t.

God is patient. His time table is not ours. 2020 was not a surprise to Him. He knows the pain, the sacrifice, even the sickness we have endured. He knows the growth and healing and salvation that will come as a result of it. He knows where we are heading and He will use this to further us AND to further His kingdom.

He has told us that He will carry out the good work in us that He started. The carrying out will be happening in us all the way up until the day of Christ Jesus. 2020 is part of that work being carried out (Philiipians 1:6).

God’s work in us, is not a one time investment. It’s a lifelong investment. Who we become; what we accomplish in Christ’s name…it is all a work in progress. It will be taking place right up until the last breath escapes our lips.

Joyce Meyer said, “Patience is not the ability to wait, but how you act while you’re waiting.” When I heard this, It stopped me in my tracks. One day 2020 will be a memory. We will get to the other side of this pandemic and when we do, will you be proud of how you acted in the waiting? Will you like who you’ve become? Until then, wait patiently and expectantly knowing God is with you.
