“Behold, God is great, and we do not know Him. Nor can the number of His years be discovered.”

Job 36:26 (NKJV)

Observation

Job is thought to be the oldest book in the Bible by many scholars and tells the story of a man who remains faithful to God despite losing everything valuable in His life. This passage in the book of Job lands towards the end of Job’s journey, through all the hardships that he encountered he never turns from God. This declaration by Job expresses the greatness of God despite not having a full understanding of who God fully is or why the bad things happened to him. It’s filled with both respect and awe but also mystery and gravity.

Application

This verse is an encouragement to me in several ways. The first thing that’s encouraging to me is the faithfulness of Job. He, despite what he went through still sees God as great and good despite his circumstance. This reminds me of how to stay faithful when I’m going through hard times. Also, Job did not know Jesus! Hebrews 1:3 explains that Jesus is the exact representation of God the Father. That same God that Job couldn’t fully know we get to know through Jesus! This truth encourages me to look deeply into the life of Jesus so I can fully understand the beauty and majesty of God our Father.

Prayer

God, thank you for Job and his story. Help me to remember that you remain faithful and true despite my circumstances and when things aren’t going my way. Thank You for showing us who You are by sending Your Son Jesus. Help me to grow closer to You by studying your word and listening for your voice, Amen.
