Day 5: Joy To The World

by Dec 5, 2020Christmas 2020, Devotional, Songs of Christmas

Joy to the world, the Lord is come
Let earth receive her King

Let every heart prepare Him room
And Heaven and nature sing
And Heaven, and Heaven, and nature sing

Joy to the World, the Savior reigns!
Let men their songs employ
While fields and floods, rocks, hills and plains
Repeat, repeat, the sounding joy

He rules the world with truth and grace
And makes the nations prove
The light of His righteousness
And wonders of His love
And wonders, wonders, of His love

It’s easy for people to be joyful in the Christmas season. There’s cheerful music, there’s festive decor, and there are delicious holiday treats. I personally love spending time with family and exchanging gifts—for me, there’s good reason to be joyful. It’s not as easy, however, for me to be joyful all the time. Christmas goes away, and the winter blues come. Often, I begin to lose the joy that the short Christmas season provides.

In theory, the idea of finding joy in Jesus sounds simple. In fact, it can sound so simple that it is defeating when it fails to arrive. The person who tells you to find joy in Jesus is well-meaning, but it can often feel impossible without an idea of how to go about finding that joy. For me, going back to my roots does the trick. I will revisit a specific song or Bible passage that speaks to me and read and re-read to remind myself of the promises of God.

The message of “Joy to the World” is full of promise and the real reason for the joy in this season, the reason that never goes away. Christ was born! God had come to save his people. His promises proved faithful and true.

Psalm 16:11 says, “you make known to me the paths of life. In your presence there is fullness of joy!” When I am struggling to remember that just because the Christmas season fades the joy of the Lord does not, this song serves as a perfect reminder. Not only is this song true when we are celebrating the birth of Jesus, but it is true all the time because we have a good God who loves us and sent His Son to this earth to save us. That is something we can rejoice in all year long.

I assure myself that just because I cannot always feel His promises does not mean they’re not true. Learning how to rejoice in Jesus through any circumstance is a process, and we’re all still learning. Thankfully, God is patient with us. Regardless of where we’re at in the process, Heaven and nature will still sing, for the Lord has come!

Day 16: Silent Night

Silent night, holy night All is calm, all is bright 'Round yon virgin Mother and Child Holy infant so tender and mild Sleep in heavenly peace   Silent night, holy night! Shepherds quake at the sight! Glories stream from heaven afar; Heavenly hosts sing Al-le-lu-ia!...
