Lessons From a Hummingbird

As summer is ending with the cooler breezes and colorful leaves approaching, I will miss seeing the regular presence of hummingbirds in my garden. And I will miss the daily reminders about transformation and rest.

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.
2 Corinthians 5:17

About two months ago, my husband purchased an easy and inexpensive hummingbird feeder kit that enables you to turn a plastic soda bottle into a feeder. Simple and ordinary trash became a welcome and needed refuge of sustenance to a family of beautiful hummingbirds, to the delight of myself and all who visit my home and gardens.

Are you feeling simple and ordinary? Are you feeling like trash? Dirty, empty, ready to be thrown out? God can take you and turn you into something of beauty, purpose, and fill you with His love and make you new. He will fill you with His Spirit and presence giving you a sweet joy and peace that only He can.

Thank you Lord, for the reminders all around us of Your faithfulness and goodness. Help us to trust You when we are in need of a spiritual makeover. Remind us when we need to be still and rest in You.

Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
Matthew 11:28

The hummingbird seems to feed from the source of sugar water many times throughout the day, with these interruptions being a necessity for energy and life itself. Occasionally it rests on the metal plant hanger from which the feeder hangs, taking a break from the whirling, fast-flying life. It is such a busy little creature that seeing one sit and be still almost seems contrary to its nature.

How much more am I busy, whirling about in life, with my mind spinning fast. Are you too busy to fill yourself throughout the day with Him and to rest in Him? We need to continually keep our eyes on Him, take captive our thoughts to Him, and renew ourselves throughout the day nourishing ourselves with His promises of who He is and who we are in Him. And we also need to stop and rest, to be still and know that He is God.

When my husband brought this simple gift home, I never knew how much joy I would have in seeing these delightful birds and how God can use His creatures to show me more about who I am in Him and how to have a deeper love relationship with God.
