Retirement Planning

by Dec 6, 2019Christmas, Christmas 2019, Devotional

Some people can’t wait to retire. They have visions of a condo on the beach and sleep uninterrupted by alarm clocks. In this dream, retirement is where the business of work ends and the business of life begins.

That’s not the case for King David. Retirement isn’t an adventure he’s excited to start, it’s a problem he’s trying to navigate. Not because he loves the grind, but because he knows he will leave some unfinished business behind.

David wanted to build a temple for God, but he wasn’t allowed to (see 1 Chronicles 28:3). Who would build the temple? More importantly, who will lead Israel after he is gone? These are important responsibilities that can’t be left to just anyone. In 2 Samuel 7:12-15, God gives David a retirement plan. And it’s better than any 401k.

David doesn’t need to worry about how the temple will get built, God says He’ll build His own. David doesn’t need to worry about who will lead Israel, He’ll establish a King who will lead forever. What David doesn’t know is that when God is talking about a temple and a King, He’s talking about the same thing.

Jesus is the King (John 18:37) who will never need replacement or reinstatement. Jesus is the Temple (John 2:18-22) that needs no construction or repair.

Christmas is the retirement plan David had been promised and all of creation had been awaiting. The business of work is finished. There is nothing more for anyone to build or do. No rules or laws to make God come closer. God comes close all on His own. Jesus is where the business of living life, and life to the fullest, begins.
