The Weapon of the Word

For the Word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and spirit, of joints and marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.

Hebrews 4:12

I’dbeen walking through those hospital doors for over 41 years, but last month, when I left work, I must admit I was a little undone. When I started as a young nursing graduate in 1980, we wore nursing caps, white uniforms, white hose and white shoes. No pants allowed.

So the new signage now posted on the hospital doors caught me off guard: “WEAPONS PROHIBITED.” I thought, “This is a hospital, not a nightclub or a casino. It’s a place where sick people are being taken care of!” I even took a picture of the signage as I was having trouble taking in how much times have changed, even here.

Heavenly Father, thank you for your Word which is alive and breathing. I thank you that I am prepared for battle every day with your Word hidden in my heart. No signage or law can take my weapon away from me. May I use your Word to bring honor and glory to You as I see and love people the way You have seen and loved me. Amen.

About 10 days later, I was walking toward the hospital entrance and caught up with Calvin, a radiology tech in the department where I work. I love Calvin. He is an Air Force veteran, a devoted husband and father, a hard worker who always has a smile, and a devout follower of Jesus. As we passed through the doors, I said to him kiddingly, referring to the signage, “Did you leave your weapon at home today?” His reply made me literally stop dead in my tracks. He replied, “I bring my weapon every day. It’s the Word of God, sharper than any two-edged sword. I’m ready for battle every day.”

Of course – the sword of the Spirit – the Word of God! It’s the only offensive weapon listed in the whole armor of God in Ephesians 6:13-17. Calvin taught me to think about the new signage in a new light. I carry something more powerful than any man-made weapon. Every day when I come to this hospital, I bring the living and breathing Word of God. Now, I walk through those doors, mask in place, with a chuckle, knowing I am ready for battle too.
