O Come Emmanuel

The Origin Story

Originally an ancient Latin text, O Come O Come Emmanuel celebrates the promise of a Savior that is foretold in the book of Isaiah, “Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: the virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel,” (7:14). The name Immanuel (or Emmanuel) is further explained in Matthew 1:23, meaning “God with us.” This song shows that Jesus became the ultimate fulfillment of this prophecy with His incarnation. Each verse in this hymn recalls this truth with a name or title of Jesus and builds to a crescendo that calls for rejoicing that God is with us. This timeless song is an anthem of hope that remembers Christ’s first coming and celebrates the assurance of His coming in the age to come.
