The Spiritual Life

We have been in the process of becoming who we are from the time we were born. Who we are today isn’t the person we were twenty years ago, or even twenty minutes ago. For better or worse, who we are, and who we are becoming, is constantly being shaped and transformed by our thoughts, our habits, and our relationships. No matter how much older we get, we never stop growing.
This is no less true for our spiritual lives as well. The moment we believe in Jesus Christ, we are born again into a new, eternal life. And this new life can be developed just as we developed in our former lives. One difference between the growth in our new life and the growth in our former life is that the Holy Spirit is actively helping us develop this new life.
As we pray and read God’s word, the Holy Spirit guides us into the truth (John 16:13). The Holy Spirit helps us develop new habits (Galatians 5:22). The Spirit unites as we enter a community of faith (Ephesians 4:3) which mutually encourages the growth of everyone (Hebrews 10:24-25). In the course of our development, as we find opportunity to share our faith with others, the Holy Spirit gives us the words to speak (Luke 12:12).
In the spiritual life, we have many opportunities to continue to develop each day. But we’re not alone in our development. As we seek God in prayer, as we enter His Word, as we enter into community, and as we share the hope we have in Christ, we are participating in the work the Holy Spirit is working in us.
