Tethered

The terror you inspire and the pride of your heart have deceived you, you who live in the clefts of the rocks, who occupy the heights of the hill, though you build your nest as high as the eagle’s, from there I will bring you down,” declares the Lord.

Jeremiah 49:16

It has been years since I have been rock climbing. What I remember most is the exhilaration of being high above the ground, but safely tethered to someone below. I remember my fingers gliding over the rough edges of stone and blindingly trying to find a crevasse for a foothold. I remember having difficulty navigating a path or line with my closeup view of the rock’s surface. And mostly, I remember communicating to the person I was tethered to below.

The thing is, I often feel like a climber… searching, scaling, scrambling through life. Our world sometimes feels so upside down, so non-sensical. Hearts are heavy. Situations are scary. People opinionate. Anger rises. Relationships splinter. Illness invades. Decisions weighed. Businesses close. Kids are isolated. A country never more divided. How did we even get here?

Jesus warned us. “In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33). Are you experiencing trouble these days? I feel like if you are breathing, you are experiencing trouble! Am I right? Yet, we read the warning and are STILL surprised when things crumble around us.

When you are scrambling for a foothold on the side of the mountain, what keeps you from falling? Are you tethered to the One who knows all things, sees all things and who OVERCOMES ALL THINGS?

Father, forgive us when we make this world about us. We turn to you. Purify and strengthen our hearts. Help us to shine brightly in the Name of Jesus.

At great heights that shake our core, we take cannot take our eyes off the Lord.  We need to let go of anything that is not of God.  Stay tethered and let Him bring you down the mountain to His presence: read and memorize scripture, pray often, listen to His Spirit and repent daily.  In our own strength, we are limited beings.  We see what is around us with earthly eyes and it takes residence in our hearts. Yet, we believe in and follow a DIVINE, LIMITLESS God!  Whether we approve of our current circumstances or not, He is always, always, always worthy to be praised! Our hope is in Him alone. This world is broken, but this not our home.  We must stay connected to the Father and not lose sight of what He promises: His will, His saving power, His faithfulness, His mercy.

His Kingdom WILL come. To God be the glory!
