You Hear Me

Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed—or indeed only one.  Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her

Luke 10:41-42 (ESV)

I had one of those scripture moments while preparing to write this. Do you know the moment I’m talking about? When you find yourself reading over a familiar scripture without really taking it in? Most of the week, I struggled. I poured over the verses again and again in my mind, glancing at the pages, and getting frustrated when the right words wouldn’t come. And then it dawned on me. “You’re struggling, Jim, because your heart isn’t in it. Don’t just read the scripture. READ what God wants you to HEAR.” My heart heard Luke 10:41-42. “Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, but only one thing is needed. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.” The first thing that struck me when I read these verses was that sometimes I get in a mindset of trying to impress the reader with what I write, instead of making writing an act of worship. I’m convinced this is why I couldn’t come up with what to write about this week until I turned it over to God. As soon as I did that, the words came.
The Great I AM – Your everlasting love sometimes gets lost on me – forgive me for that. I only ask that You don’t let me miss hearing You. And thank You for hearing me..

The second thing that struck me is that while these verses are very familiar, the message just wasn’t registering. The only thing that is needed is to believe. So simple, yet I almost missed it. It saddens me to know that our very human compulsion to add “things” to God’s promise of salvation happens because we think it can’t be as easy as it sounds. But it is that easy. And I love our great God for that.
